Habitat and Spawning Ground CreationAs in all pages on this site we are looking for ideas. The following informal ideas are coming from our fisheries contacts and peopl at the Trinity River Restoration Project. Some of what the salmon and steelhead need is fairly well known. The stream diversions have altered the stream beds significantly, but perhaps in ways that might allow for the creation of stream bed spawning and habitat areas. This might be especially possible in some of the areas where lands bordering the stream channels are being divested by PG&E for acquisition by resource conservation entities through the Stewardship Council process. Downstream ranches may cooperate. Clearly the spawning and habitat areas have been impacted by channel encroachment and ranch activities. The Trinity River Restoration Project has done a dramatic job of rebuilding habitat areas and remediating large areas of river-bed to make it suitable for salmon habitat and to a less extent spawning grounds. Perhaps some of the same principles could be applied to the South Cow as the Hydro diversions are removed and the river beds restored. |
